The death toll from floods in Malawi and neighboring Mozambique has now reached over 100, according to officials.

56 people are so far known to have died from the Floods in the southern Malawi, sparking fears of further potential destruction in the coming days.

The country has now issued an alert for an approaching tropical cyclone, with thousands now displaced.

Chipiliro Khamula, spokesman for Malawi’s Department of Disaster Management revealed that apart from the 56 deaths some 577 injuries have also been recorded as at Tuesday.

Khamula said “Most of the displaced families are living in camps. So far, a total of 187 camps have been established in the affected districts.”

In Mozambique some 70 people are reported dead from the floods already.

Heavy rains for days now have led to rivers breaking their banks, causing destruction in many areas.

Power and water supplies in some areas have been badly affected due to the floods.

On Thursday Malawi is expecting an impact from Tropical Cyclone Idai with a landfall expected in Beira, in neighbouring Mozambique.

Malawians have been warned of more floods with the President, Peter Mutharika declaring a state of disaster last week.
