A South African High Court has sentenced two white farmers to jail for the murder of a black teenager who was said to have stolen sunflowers.

The two, Pieter Doorewaard, 28, and Phillip Schutte, 35, were found guilty of murder, kidnapping and other charges.

The court sentenced Mr. Doorewaard to 18 years in jail whiles Mr. Schutte was also handed 23 years on Wednesday.

They claim the 15 -year old boy jumped off a truck they put him in on the way to a nearby police station resulting in his death in April 2017.

The death of Matlhomola Mosweu at Coligny near West Johannesburg renewed tension and racial division in the Rainbow nation.

Judge Ronald Hendricks charged the two for being guilty of murder and kidnapping but ruled that the killing was not premeditated.

He described the action as disgraceful and appalling.

The death of the 15-year old boy led to days of rioting and looting in the farming town, especially against white-owned businesses.

The South Africa government’s decision to expropriate land without compensation has led to tensions between white farmers and black residents.

President Cyril Ramaphosa had tried to allay fears in and outside South Africa that the policy would not lead to violence or economic turmoil.
