Police in Tanzania say they have arrested some 65 persons engaged in ritual killings in the south-west and northern part of the country.
These traditional doctors are reportedly facing police probe for their alleged involvement in killing children for such rituals.
45 of such traditional doctors were arrested in the Simiyu township while 20 others are from Njombe community.
Police officials told reporters that the suspects will be interrogated over the increase in killings for ritual purposes.
At least 10 children in Njombe region have been killed for rituals. Such killings have also taken place in the Simiyu region early this year.
Tanzania’s Inspector General of Police Simon Sirro says his outfit wants to crackdown on the activities of these traditional doctors.
Sirro says “I have ordered that every traditional doctor, both registered and unregistered, must be interrogated and inspected, and those who will be identified as criminals.
We have also ordered the authorities to start fresh registration, but we have also requested other institutions like religious leaders and politicians to help us.”
In many African countries people believe in killings for ritual purposes to increase wealth.
Persons like Albinos are always targeted in parts of the continent. They are killed for rituals since some believe their bodies could help to increase wealth.
In Mozambique even bald people are targets of ritual attacks.
