Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission on Friday said some of its officials across the country were rape during the recently held general elections.
In a statement INEC said some of these officials were subjected to “threats, harassment, intimidation, assault and even rape”.
These reported crimes were committed according to INEC during an election it says was however “generally peaceful”.
INEC issued the statement after holding a meeting with its resident electoral commissioners across the country.
It also criticized some security officials saying: “The conduct of certain members of the security agencies in some sites is a matter of serious concern to the commission.”

Buhari wins second term
Incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari was declared winner of the February 23 presidential election.
Buhari secured 56 percent of votes, while his main rival from the opposition Atiku Abubakar managed 41 percent of the votes.
President Buhari according to INEC won by 3.9 million votes. He garnered 15.2 million to Atiku’s 11.3 million.
But the turnout was 35.6 percent, compared with 44 percent in the 2015 presidential election, according to INEC.
There are indications the low turnout could be due to the decision to delay the process by a week
Rejection of results
But the opposition leader, Atiku Abubakar has already rejected the results saying he will challenge them in court.
He said “with regards to the Presidential elections that took place on February 23, 2019, it is clear that there were manifest and premeditated malpractices in many states which negate the results announced.”
“The suppressed votes in my strongholds are so apparent and amateurish, that I am ashamed as a Nigerian that such could be allowed to happen,” he added.
Atiku Abubakar who is a former vice president of Nigeria was trying to prevent Buhari from securing a second term.
