Senegal’s President Macky Sall has the country’s presidential election, according to provisional results announced on Thursday.

He won by 58 percent of votes cast in last weekend’s poll, the body in-charge of the election said.

Provisional results also show that opposition candidate Idrissa Seck secure second spot with 21 percent of votes.

The third candidate in the election with 16 percent of votes is Ousmane Sonko. Over 66 percent of the 6.7 million registered voters participated in the process.

Earlier in the week when Sall’s camp claimed victory, the opposition parties insisted that there was the likelihood of a second round of voting.

Macky Sall who first came into power seven years ago will now serve his second term without a run-off.

The results from the national vote counting commission will now have to be validated by the constitutional council.

Any candidate unhappy with the results can file an appeal within 72 hours.

Sunday’s voting was peaceful helping to prolong Senegal’s status as one of the most stable democracies in West Africa.

Since its independence in 1960, Senegal has not witnessed a coup making it one of the most stable countries in Africa as well.
