Zimbabwean authorities have released the Secretary General of the African Regional Organization of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC-Africa) after a short detention.

The Trade Unionist was arrested on Tuesday by immigration officials in Zimbabwe.

Mr. Adu-Amankwa, a Ghanaian was forcefully taken from Jameson Hotel where he had just checked in upon arrival in Zimbabwe.

He was in the country to meet Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) staff.

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions is an affiliate of the International Trade Union Confederation.

The Union in a statement condemned Adu-Amankwa’s arrest and demanded his release.

It further called on the government to render an apology and avert future occurrence in Zimbabwe.

Africafeeds.com understands the detention of Mr Adu Amankwah might have been part of efforts by the government to avert external influence capable of triggering another protest.

Previous protests over economic situation in Zimbabwe led to several arrests and some deaths.

The Zimbabwe trade union played a key role in organizing the protests.

Last month Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions president Peter Gift Mutasa appeared in court after being charged with attempting to subvert a constitutionally elected government.
