Four Telecomunication firms namely MTN, Vodafone, AirtelTigo and Glo are challenging a $7 million fine imposed on them by Ghana’s National Communication Authority.
The regulator in November last year imposed the fine for non-compliance with various quality service requirements.
Africafeeds.com understands the telcos have filed an injunction to stop the regulator NCA from executing the fine.
The regulator offered the telcos a 30 day ultimatum to pay the $7 million fine or face further sanctions.
Ghana’s Electronic Communications Tribunal, is mandated to consider appeals brought by telecommmunication industry players against decisions or orders made by the NCA.
The telecom providers who seem not to be clear with the action taken by the NCA, are taking advantage of the Act to seek redress at the tribunal.
The tribunal is expected to make a ruling on the injunction application at its second hearing in the Capital Accra this week.
About the fine
AirtelTigo received the highest fine of $2.4 million followed by MTN with $1.8 million fine. Vodafone was also fined over $1.6 million and Glo $828,000.
These are the biggest fines imposed on the telcos so far by the country’s telecom regulator.
Many communities in Ghana are without proper connectivity and instances where they do, services are poor.
