An explosion in an Egyptian Coptic church led to the death of a policeman on Saturday.

The police man was reportedly trying to defuse an explosive device outside the church building when it exploded killing him.

Egypt security officials say two other officers were also wounded in the explosion. The incident occurred in Nasr City on the edge of Cairo.

Local media reports that the device was hidden inside a bag searched by police. The name of the policeman killed was given as Mustafa Abid, a specialist in mine clearance.

Security has been reinforced in Cairo ahead of Christmas, which Egypt’s minority Coptic Christians will celebrate on January 7.

Coptic Christians, account for around 10 percent of Egypt’s population and are constantly becoming targets of Islamic militant attacks.

Last November seven Coptic Christians were killed after gunmen opened fire on a bus carrying them.

The attack happened in central Egypt as the victims headed to a Coptic Christian monastery in upper Egypt.

In 2017 ISIS killed more than 40 people in twin church bombings in April. A month later almost 30 Christians in the same Minya province were shot dead.
