Police in South Africa say a 33-year-old father set his home ablaze killing himself and three of his own children.

The man identified as Thato Maela is reported to have argued with his wife before burning his home.

According to police the man used petrol to burn down his house located in Ga-Masemola, outside Polokwane.

His three children, aged between four and six died in the incident but his wife escaped unhurt, News24 reports.

South African police spokesperson Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe told local media the incident happened on Sunday.

Ngoepe said “Fortunately, the partner managed to flee from the suspect unhurt.”

“The police were alerted about this incident. They swiftly responded, together with emergency medical services.

On arrival, the EMS certified the three children and the suspect dead,” the police officer said.

Police say they are yet to identify the motive behind the incident although they claim domestic violence could be a reason.

The South African police is now investigating the incident focusing on issues of arson, murder and attempted murder.
