After two and a half years in charge of Manchester United, Jose Mourinho has been sacked.

The club made the announcement on Tuesday in a statement thanking the Portuguese for his service during his tenure.

Mourinho 55, won the League Cup and the Europa League at Old Trafford. But United are sixth in the Premier League, 19 points behind leaders Liverpool, who beat them 3-1 on Sunday.

The club statement said “A caretaker-manager will be appointed until the end of the season while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager”.

“The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future,” the statement added.

Mourinho, arrived at Carrington on Tuesday, just minutes before leaving his job. He is set to receive a £22.5m pay-off with the club still in the Champions League.

Assistant coach Michael Carrick is to remain in charge until a temporary manager is picked. United drew Paris Saint-Germain on Monday in the last 16 of the Champions League.
