Foreigners hoping to work in Kenya can no longer apply for a work permit whiles residing in the East African Country.
That’s according to Kenya’s Interior Cabinet Minister Fred Matianga. He says this has become necessary with the coming into effect of the country’s new reforms in the migration sector.
According to Mr Matianga, anyone interested in work permit must henceforth apply from their home countries and move to Kenya after it has been approved.
Mr Matianga added that “We are not being unreasonable, we are being extremely reasonable and we are actually behaving like how all reasonable people behave. Because if you get a job in South Africa or elsewhere you apply for your work permit before you go there.”
He added that “We have been having this system, where People come along on a visitor’s visa in some cases on a visitor and they become a challenge to us.”
The private sector according to the Interior Cabinet Minister has been recently complaining about the level of clearance of work permit.
He further revealed that the country is going to be very strict in the issuance of work permit in a bid to protect the country.
Mr Matianga added that ten thousand graduates leave the university every year and need to be employed.
Kenya is currently ranked 61 globally, from a rank of 80 last year in the World Bank’s ease of doing business survey, making it among the most improved countries in the world.
