Nigerian lawmakers have summoned the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Stuart Symington following reports that many Nigerians continue to be denied visas to the US.
The national assembly of Nigeria was reportedly reacting to a petition sent to it by a citizen called Kayode Bello.
The summon was titled ‘Indiscriminate denial of United States of America visa and illegal increment of exchange rate of visa fee by the American embassy’.
The document was signed by the House Committee Chairman on Public Petitions, Uzo Azubuike.
It was dated November 27, 2018 and hearing of the case is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, December 4.
Meanwhile there are reports the summon was rejected by the US embassy.
An official of the national assembly, Omale Adoyi told PUNCH that “we will go on with the hearing and may have to adjourn if they fail to show up”.
Local media reports that many Nigerian students recently were denied visas to travel to America for their studies.
These students had spent a lot of money on different fees the US embassy requested.
Many of these students had already paid for their application, evaluation, courier and school fees. They however still get denied visas.
In some instances students according to PUNCH claim “they were denied visas because they were not married”.
“Others said they were denied because only one of their parents was their sponsor,” the newspaper reports.
