Fighting between soldiers and rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo has led to the death of sixteen people.
AFP reports that most of those killed were rebels, but some soldiers also died in the clash.
Congolese army officials say a commander and three soldiers drowned in a river during the clash.
Local media reports that the clash happened in Fizi, a region of South Kivu.
The rebels who clashed with the government troops are reportedly loyal to a former army general, William Amuri Yakutumba, who opposes President Joseph Kabila.
Security is still a major concern in DR Congo as the country prepares for crucial general elections this month.
Campaigns have already started as the country gears up for the elections to be held on December 23.
It could be the first time DR Congo will witness a peaceful transfer of power through an election.
The ruling party of President Joseph Kabila has picked former interior minister Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary for the presidential race.
His biggest challenge is expected to come from the opposition which has formed an alliance to pick a unified candidate.
Businessman and lawmaker Martin Fayulu is that representative for the opposition coalition in the December presidential election.
But the opposition is seen as fractured since not all opposition candidates back him.
