An Egyptian actress will be going on trial for wearing what authorities say was a revealing dress.

Rania Youssef has been charged with “inciting debauchery” for attending the Cairo Film Festival in the said revealing dress.

She wore a lacy and black but a see-through outfit, exposing most parts of her legs. Local media reports that the attire caused outrage in Egypt.

AFP reports that a source confirmed that the actress could face a jail term for up to five years if found guilty during trial.

One of the lawyers that took the actress to court Samir Sabri told the AFP that Youssef’s appearance “did not meet societal values, traditions and morals.”

He said the actress “therefore undermined the reputation of the festival and the reputation of Egyptian women in particular”.

Rania Youssef, 44 reportedly apologised for wearing the dress and said she regrets the reaction to it.

Last year an Egyptian singer was jailed by a court for appearing in a music video and suggestively eating banana.

Shaimaa Ahmed who was jailed for two years appeared in the said music video in her underwear.
