South Africa’s Presidency has confirmed that the country’s home affairs minister Malusi Gigaba has resigned.
The minister’s resignation is coming weeks after a video capturing him masturbating went viral on-line.
Gigaba however apologised in October over the private sex video claiming his phone was hacked when he was finance minister.
He served as finance minister between March 2017 and February 2018 under former President Jacob Zuma.
The former minister was also accused of lying under oath, a charge a High Court convicted him. He however denied any wrong doing.
The court ruled last December ruled that Gigaba violated the constitution for denying claims that he approved an application for an immigration service for wealthy VIPs to be operated at Johannesburg’s main airport.
There was pressure from opposition political parties for him to be removed from office after the public protector asked that he is disciplined.
A statement from President Cyril Ramaphosa’s office said “The president has accepted the minister’s resignation.”
