Voters in Madagascar are going to the polls on Wednesday to elect a new president.
In all 36 candidates are contesting the presidential election. Among them is Hery Rajaonarimampianina who stepped down as President in September this year.
His main challengers are two other former presidents – Marc Ravalomanana and Andry Rajoelina.
For any candidate to win the race, that candidate must win more than 50 percent of total votes cast.
If no candidate secured more than 50 percent of votes, there will be a second round of voting scheduled for December 19.
Winner of the election will have a major task of dealing with poverty and corruption in the country.
There were protests a few months ago after the country banned some prominent politicians from contesting the election.

The ban was lifted by then President Heri Rajaonarimampianina who then accepted the formation of a “consensus” government to help organize the impending poll.
Madagascar, a former French colony has a population of 25 million. The country has suffered from series of political instability for years.
