Pik Botha, an Apartheid-era foreign affairs minister has died on Friday at the age of 86.
His family confirmed his death to South African media on Friday morning.
Botha’s son, Piet told News24 that his father died peacefully in his sleep. “His wife Ina was with him until the end,” Piet was quoted as saying.
“He was very sick during the last three weeks and his body just couldn’t take it anymore,” his son added.
Roelof “Pik” Botha as he is called was the world’s longest-serving foreign minister. He was born in April 1932 and started his career in the foreign affairs department in 1953.
He was the foreign affairs minister until the end of the apartheid in 1994. He was known to be a strong defender of the apartheid system.
He also served as a minister in Nelson Mandela’s first post-apartheid government.
