Uganda’s army has launched a new brand of condom for its troops. The latest brand is called Ulinzi which means “protection” in Swahili.
The new condoms are to help the soldiers have safe sex while on duty in Uganda or abroad.
Local media reports that the leadership of the army hopes this will encourage the soldiers to consider the safety during sex at all times.
Chief of Staff Brig Leopold Kyanda is quoted by NTV as saying to soldiers that they must be “safe first and thereafter you can defend the country”.
“If the individual soldier does not ensure that he is secure then there is no way he can defend his country,” he added.
HIV infection rate among Uganda troops is said to be high. The Ulinzi condom comes in a camouflage packet.
An official of the country’s health ministry, Vastha Kibirige says the condoms should help stop soldiers bringing HIV back home after a tour of duty.
“The nature of this job has many challenges. [The soldiers] sometimes go to war zones where they meet up with women for pleasure.
“They have to protect their lives to avoid infecting their wives back home,” she is quoted as saying by Uganda’s NTV news.
