Ghanaian officials have arrested seventy-two Nigerians and a Togolese for staying in the country without proper documentation.
All those arrested and set to be deported are women, according to Immigration Service officials.
Local media reports that some of those set to be deported were engaging in prostitution in parts of Ghana.
Ghanaian officials said all the Nigerians and the Togolese would be repatriated to their home countries in the coming days.
An immigration service official, Linda Asare Mantey told journalists that “It is illegal to come to the country and engage in prostitution.”
She said some of the suspects “have built ghettos and kiosks where they operate.” Some of them according to Mantey were arrested in the act.
Young girls and women from Nigeria are often trafficked to Ghana. They are lured into prostitution by syndicates under the pretext of securing them jobs.
Ghana’s laws clamp down on prostitution but authorities have struggled to eliminate brothels operating in most parts of the country.
