Hundreds of people in Tanzania are feared dead after a ferry carrying passengers capsized on Lake Victoria in the northern part of the country.
Five people have so far been confirmed died but that death toll could rise according to officials who say the ferry was carrying over 400 people.
102 people have so far been rescued, according a BBC report quoting a local official.
Local media reports that the MV Nyerere ferry capsized near the shore between the islands of Ukora and Bugolora.
Emergency teams are being assisted by locals in the area to rescue people.
The regional official, Adam Malima told reporters that “We pray to God to give us hope in such an accident
“We pray to God to give us hope that there has not been a high death toll.”
Lake Victoria, which is Africa’s largest lake has in the past recorded accidents. In 1996 over 800 people died in a similar disaster.
