A sister of former Zimbabwean first lady Grace Mugabe has been arrested on fraud charges.
Local media reports that Shuvai Gumbochuma is accused of allegedly reselling state-allocated land for profit four years ago.
Shuvai Gumbochuma, is eight years older than the 53-year-old Grace. She appeared at the Harare Magistrates Court on Friday, the Herald reports.
The Herald quoted state papers that stated that “Gumbochuma profiteered from State land thereby distorting the market value of the land from a mere $424 426 to an inflated value of $2 060 000 without making any developments.”
“She made a profit of $1 636 574 without doing anything,” the documents further said. Gumbochuma has however been released on $500 bail.
Gumbochuma is facing other charges of receiving land for development two years ago, using the name of an unregistered company.
Grace Mugabe recently praised President Emmerson Mnangagwa for helping her to return to Zimbabwe for her mother’s funeral.
She had a frosty relationship with the President before and after the exit of her husband, Robert Mugabe from power.
President Mnangagwa says his government is committed to fighting corruption and is not relenting in that battle.
