Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has warned against foreign interference in his country’s political landscape.
He told reporters on Sunday that “It is important that external players refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of other countries.”
Museveni was reacting to calls by an opposition figure Robert Kyagulanyi also known as Bobi Wine for the United States to suspend military aid to Uganda.
Bobi Wine says the government’s human rights record isn’t good to deserve continues foreign assistance.
He was tortured while in custody after his arrest for allegedly instigating an attack on President Museveni last month.
Bobi Wine is now in the USA seeking medical attention. He told journalists last week that the United States must stop funding Uganda’s military as a punitive measure.
But Museveni said “If there’s any problem in Uganda, I surely will handle it better than the outsider.” He claimed that “NGOs (non-governmental organisations) funded by foreign governments actually give money to opposition players, give advice, lie on their behalf.”
Museveni has been in power since 1986. There are fears he could seek re-election once more in the 2021 presidential election.
The country’s parliament recently amended its constitution to remove the age limit. That means Mr. Museveni who will be over 75 years by 2021 can run for president.
