Nigeria’s Senate leader, Bukola Saraki has announced plans to run for President.
He is likely to stand on the ticket of the opposition party, the PDP to challenge President Muhammadu Buhari.
Saraki made the announcement on Thursday. He becomes the highest profile person set to challenge President Buhari in next year’s Presidential poll.
He defected from the ruling APC party to the opposition in July, accusing Mr. Buhari of non-performance.
Saraki said at a political event in Abuja that “GDP growth rate has declined. Diversification remains an illusion.
Unemployment is at an all-time high. Businesses are shutting down. Jobs are being lost in record numbers, and the capital needed to jumpstart our economy is going elsewhere.”
President Buhari appears to be facing major challenges ahead of the 2019 poll with defections and splits within his ruling party.
It is yet to be seen the kind of threat Saraki could pose to Buhari’s intention to retain power.
