A Nigerian woman has been arrested by police in the country’s Edo State for selling her own six-week old baby.
23-year-old mother, Miracle Johnson sold her baby just to raise enough money to buy a new phone.
Local newspaper Punch reports that Miracle sold the baby called Greatness, to an orphanage in the Anambra State, for $555 (N200,000).
She received cash for the sale of the baby, an act police say is a serious offence. She used part of the money to buy a phone.
The suspect told police her action was due to frustration and the failure of her husband to take care of her and other children.
She said “My baby was born on July 2. I sold her due to frustration. My husband was just struggling (to provide for us).
“My friend (Mama Joy) said that since my husband was not taking care of me, if I did it (sold the baby), I could give the money to my husband to start a business or buy a motorcycle.
“Two weeks later, she came back. I did not know what happened to me. So, I carried a bag, picked some things and left.”
Miracle confessed her crime to her pastor. She was accompanied by her husband to report to the police and will now be charged to court.
There have been reports of orphanages in Nigeria engaging in the business of taking in infants and re-selling them for profit.
Police in Nigeria have been embarking on an operation to deal with such baby homes.
