The Nigerian Army says soldiers who protested their deployment to some communities to fight Boko Haram will be punished.
The soldiers this month blocked the Maiduguri Airport in reaction to reports that they were going to be deployed to a restive part of the country’s northeast.
Apart from blocking the airport for a few hours, some of them also shot into the air creating panic around the area.
They did not want to be redeployed from their base in Maiduguri, state capital of Borno, to Marte.
A senior army officer Maj. General A.M. Dikko is reported by the News Agency of Nigeria to have said on Saturday that the agitating soldiers would be disciplined.
“We don’t punish in the military. We discipline. Discipline is the bedrock of the job. If there’s no discipline, then we can’t have an army. So if a soldier errs, he must be corrected”, Dikko said at an event.
President Muhammadu Buhari’s government continues to struggle to defeat Boko Haram despite promising to do so.
Millions have been displaced by the activities of Boko Haram and thousands killed.
Soldiers and other security forces continue to be killed by these militants during combats and ambush attacks.
