A critic of Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been set free after he was arrested by police for insulting the President.
On Thursday police dropped charges against Munyaradzi Shoko, a well known critic of the President. Shoko, heads the pressure group Children of Zimbabwe War Veterans Association.
Munyaradzi Shoko, was however held for hours after posting some statements on Facebook. He claimed that president’s name was “generally associated with evil and devilish deeds.”
Munyaradzi Shoko was also charged earlier with public violence for taking part in an opposition protest last month. At least six peopled died in that protest after soldiers shot into protesters.
Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights spokesperson Kumbirai Mafunda says Shoko was detained at Harare central police station on Wednesday.
“At court today they dropped the criminal nuisance and public violence charges,” Mafunda said.
President Mnangagwa election victory last month is facing a legal challenge. The country’s top court will give judgment on the case on Friday.
He became President last year after former leader, Robert Mugabe resigned from power after a military takeover.
