One of Ghana’s former Presidents, John Dramani Mahama on Thursday declared his intention to contest the 2020 presidential election.
The former President who was defeated in the 2016 election by current President, Nana Akufo Addo made the announcement on social media.
He wrote on Twitter that “I have submitted my letter to the general secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) declaring my decision to contest for the leadership of the party”.
In a video on Facebook he said the decision will help him “right the wrong of the past.”
“I’ve prayed diligently about the task ahead and I believe I owe a duty to God and my country to take our great party back into government to right the wrongs of the past and to put an end to the cries of the people under the current dispensation,” he said.
Key Battle for Presidency
Mr. Mahama will now have to battle it out with other members of the NDC party for the flagbearership slot. The winner of that race will then lead the party into the 2020 polls.
Already some of his previous appointees have declared their candidacies for the presidential primaries.
Mr. Mahama who was president between 2012 and 2017 had previously served as vice president under the late President, John Evans Atta Mills.

John Mahama took over from him months before the 2012 elections following President Mills’ demise in July of that year.
On Wednesday Mr. Mahama visited the founder of the opposition party and another former President, Jerry John Rawlings.
It is believed his visit was to inform him of his decision to run again as President.

Mr. Mahama remains very popular among Ghanaians especially his party. He is considered the favourite to win the Presidential primaries of his party this year.
