The former President of Comoros Ahmed Abdallah Mohamed Sambi who has been under house arrest for months has now been taken into custody.
He is under investigations over his role in a scheme to sell citizenship, according to prosecutors.
Investigators considered the scheme riddled with corrupt practice with the interior ministry.
Sambi was placed under house arrest in May for trying to incite his supporters after he was questioned.
But an investigating judge has now ordered that Sambi is formerly detained while investigations continue.
Sambi, and 11 other former senior officials from the previous administration have now been banned from travelling.
He was in power from 2006 to 2011 and has denied the allegations against him.
Meanwhile there are fears Sambi’s arrest could be linked to ongoing crackdown on critics of current President, President Azali Assoumani.
Several people have been arrested after the reported “failed coup attempt”. The alleged coup attempt is coming days after a constitutional referendum.
The referendum was to extend the presidential term limit in Comoros. That also provides the opportunity for President Azali Assoumani to extend his stay in office.
