Mali’s constitutional court has confirmed President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita’s re-election in a run-off poll this month.
The court on Monday ruled rejecting allegations of fraud characterizing the presidential run-off as claimed by the opposition.
President Keita won the heavily disputed run-off election with 67.17% of the votes. His opponent, the opposition candidate Soumaila Cisse, won 32.83% of the votes.
The opposition rejected the election results and filed a case at the constitutional court.
On Saturday hundreds of Malians took to the streets to demonstrate over the election results.
Saturday’s mass protest was to put pressure on the President and his government over the alleged electoral fraud.
The decision of the court now clears the way for Keita to be inaugurated next month. He will serve a second five-year term.
In 2013 president Keita, beat Soumaila Cisse in a second round of voting. He won then by 77% although the opposition disputed the outcome.
Mali has experienced a lot of jihadist violence and ethnic attacks over the years with little progress in stopping them.
