A very vocal Ugandan lawmaker, Robert Kyagulanyi also known popularly as Bobi Wine is to face an army court martial on Thursday.

He has been charged with treason following his arrest on Tuesday. He is part of other MPs arrested for instigating an attack on Uganda’s president, Yoweri Museveni.

Police said the President’s convoy was attacked in the town of Arua in the country’s northwest on Monday.

One of the vehicles in the convoy had its rear windscreen shattered, according to reports. Bobi Wine was campaigning for independent candidate in the race, Kassiano Wadri.

The MP’s driver was killed in the violent incident. The MP’s family claimed he was rather the target of that shooting incident.

Thirty people were arrested as a result of the incident including some journalists. The incident happened while Museveni was leaving a rally ground.

Bobi Wine is reported to have been taken to hospital on Wednesday after falling ill in custody.

The Deputy Prime Minister, Moses Ali told parliament on Wednesday that Bobi Wine will face the Army Court Martial on Thursday.

Charges against arrested MPs

The Police in Uganda revealed details of the charges against the lawmakers including Bobi Wine.

Police spokesperson of north-western region, Josephine Angucia told journalists that Bobi Wine and other MPs in custody are facing charges of malicious damage to the motorvehicle belonging to the convoy of the President.

They are also facing charges of unlawful possession of firearms and treason.

“For that matter, all have been charged with treason, unlawful possession of firearms, that is for the case of Kyagulanyi Robert and malicious damage to the motorvehicle belonging to the convoy of the President,”Angucia said.

President Museveni has blamed the stoning of his convoy on “weak management by the police and the criminal behavior of some of the opposition leaders.”

“Some leaders have been acting with impunity … these acts are strongly rejected and will be punished,” he said in a statement.
