An entire Tanzanian village in the southern part of the country faces police arrest over a broken water pipe.
Police revealed on Thursday that they intend arresting all the residents of the Ngolo village. The arrest has become necessary after a mob there destroyed water pipes.
The villagers are accused of deliberately destroying pipes supplying water to nearby communities in the Mbeya region.
The Ngolo village has a population of around 1,600. Access to water in the village and surrounding communities is a challenge.
The governor of the area, Albert Chalamila on Wednesday “ordered that all the inhabitants of this village be arrested regardless of their condition.”
Police officers were deployed to the community on Thursday to arrest the villagers, according to a senior police officer Ulrich Matei.
“They committed economic sabotage. The government has disbursed money, installed water pipes and they destroyed them! We cannot accept that,” Matie is quoted as saying.
Matie said “enough vehicles, with enough fuel and police on board” have been deployed to ensure the successful arrest of the villagers.
