World football governing body Fifa has announced a ban on Zambia’s football great Kalusha Bwalya.
The African football legend has been banned for two years from all football activities.
Bwalya is alleged to have links to banned Qatari official Mohammed Bin Hammam.
Fifa’s Ethics Committee said Bwalya, is banned for two years from “all football-related activities (administrative, sports or any other) at both national and international level”.
Bwalya is member of the Confederation of African Football (Caf) executive committee.
Fifa said investigations into 54-year-old’s engagement with Hammam started in February 2017. It said the probe “focused principally on benefits that Mr Bwalya had received from Mr Bin Hammam”.
“The adjudicatory chamber found Mr Bwalya guilty of having violated art. 16 (Confidentiality) and art. 20 (Offering and accepting gifts and other benefits) of the FIFA Code of Ethics. A fine in the amount of CHF 100,000 was also imposed on Mr Bwalya, ” the statement added.
The Fifa statement said “the decision was notified to Mr Bwalya today (Friday), and the ban comes into force immediately.”
Meanwhile Bwalya has reacted to the ban saying in a statement that he was surprised by the decision and intends appealing it.
