South Africans have been mourning a young South African who committed suicide following her ordeal in the hands of rapists.

Funeral was held for the 23 year old, Khensani Maseko on Thursday in Johannesburg following a sexual assault on her in May.

Khensani Maseko from the Rhodes University committed suicide at her family’s home in Johannesburg last Friday afternoon.

The third year BA student was a member of the Economic Freedom Fighters.

She had written a post on Instagram saying “No-one deserves to be raped!” before she died.

Maseko’s funeral took place on a day South Africa is marking Women’s Day. Many questioning the country’s commitment in dealing with rape.

Times reports that Police minister Bheki Cele said at the funeral that there was an urgent need to teach boys the importance of respecting women.

“Stop making them super kings. Boys grow up owning everything‚ including women around them. We have made it normal that boys have extra access to girls’ bodies,” Cele is quoted as saying.

South Africa is among top countries globally with highest rape statistics. Last year there were nearly 4,000 cases reported to police.
