Ethiopian officials are reported to have shutdown internet service in the eastern part of the country.

The decision is due to ongoing violence and ethnic tension there including the Somali region.

Weeks of violence has created insecurity in the region with the central government deploying soldiers there.

Many have been displaced and several others reported dead from ethnic violence.

Reuters reports that some residents in eastern Ethiopia say the internet has been off for the past three days.

On Tuesday the former leader of the Ethiopian Somali region Abdi Mohamud Omar was arrested.

Omar who is being detained in Addis Ababa, according to local media reports was arrested by federal military officials.

Why Omar resigned

Omar’s decision to step down follows days of tension and clashes in the Somali region after the government deployed soldiers there.

Ethnic Somalis in the eastern Ethiopian city of Jigjiga were reported to be leaving amid growing violence.

This has sparked fighting between Somali and Oromo communities in the region.

Over the weekend Ethiopian soldiers clashed with these local security forces the country’s eastern Somali region.
Both set of troops exchanged gunshots. The clashes on Saturday were as a result of attempts to arrest regional officials.
