South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa says his ruling party the African National Congress (ANC) will back an amendment to the country’s Constitution to allow for expropriation of land without compensation.
In a speech on Tuesday President Ramaphosa said “the ANC will, through the parliamentary process, finalise a proposed amendment to the Constitution that outlines more clearly the conditions under which expropriation of land without compensation can be effected.
South Africa’s parliament in February adopted a motion seeking to amend the country’s Constitution to allow for the expropriation of land without compensation.
The motion was brought by the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters, Julius Malema and received 241 in support, and 83 against.
The country’s Constitutional Review Committee has been working on the land reform process and is to report back to Parliament by August 30.
Ramaphosa says “the intention of this proposed amendment is to promote redress, advance economic development, increase agricultural production and food security.”
