Four prisoners are reported dead following days of rioting in Ethiopian prison facilities.
Riots broke out in six Ethiopian prisons after the parliament passed a law granting amnesty to dissidents.
Local media reports that inmates attempted to escape by setting the prisons on fire.
The deaths occurred in northern part of the country.
The inmates want to be released under the new amnesty law which covers political prisoners.
Although many of these inmates have been pardoned, the remaining still demand their immediate freedom.
Two prisoners died at one prison in the town of Woldiya and another two in the main prison in the northern city of Mekele.
Several other prisoners have been injured in the riots across the country.
A prisoner official has also disclosed that some of the inmates that sustained injuries were shot while trying to escape.
The government says the amnesty law does not cover all prisoners especially those jailed on corruption and robbery charges.
