Police in Western Ghana have lashed a 14-year-old boy 36 times for alleged insubordination.
A police commander in a community called Akontombra, ASP Dickson Obeng is reported by local media to have ordered the punishment.
Citi Fm reports that the police commander gave the orders for the teenager to be whipped for “fighting with one of his classmates.”
Father of the young boy Enoch Tandoh was quoted by Citi FM as saying that “I was in my farm when my wife called to inform me that our children have returned from school, but Stanley is bleeding at his back and so I should stop the farm work and help take him to the hospital”.
Why the boy was lashed?
Tandoh said he asked his son, Stanley why he was lashed, and he replied that “the Police Commander ASP Dickson Obeng, whose office is just behind their school, ordered his men to whip him for fighting with one of his classmates after school had closed.”
Pictures of the young boy have gone viral on social media. They show the boy with marks of the physical assault at his back.
Tandoh says “When we got to the commander, he said my son was fighting with one of his classmates but despite a call on him to stop, he refused so he ordered his men to teach him a lesson”
The father of the 14-year old boy is now seeking justice and hopes to be assisted.
“In fact, I got alarmed when he said all that is to be done is to look for a northern region type of shea butter to apply and my boy will be fine. This is where I don’t understand. But the BNI officer is assisting me to seek justice for my son” he told Citi FM.
Police Brutality in Ghana
Just last week a police officer in Ghana was caught on video brutalizing a woman and her baby.
The police officer was seen beating the woman and her toddler in a banking hall in the country’s capital Accra.
Frederick Amanor Skalla, the police officer is currently facing prosecution following outrage from Ghanaians including the President, Nana Akufo Addo.
There have been other instances of police brutality and inaction that have attracted anger from Ghanaians.
