Al Shabaab militants say they have attacked a Somali military base killing 27 soldiers.
The militants claim to have carried out a suicide car bomb attack in the south of the country, according to Reuters reports.
The group made the claim on Monday with some residents confirming that they heard a blast in the area.
Somalia’s government has not reacted to the latest attack on the military base in Baar Sanguni.
Reuters quotes al Shabaab’s spokesman for military operations, Abdiasis Abu Musab as saying that “We first attacked the base with a suicide car bomb and then stormed”
“We killed 27 soldiers and took the base. Some soldiers fled into the jungles.”
A military official however told Reuters that reinforcement was been sent to the base to react to the militant attack.
“We have sent reinforcement to the base,” Majo Mohamud Aden, a Somali military officer, told Reuters from Kismayu.
“We understand there was an explosion and heavy fighting between al Shabaab, who attacked the base, and the Somali forces. We have no details so far” he added.
Al-shabaab has for years carried out deadly attacks in Somalia where it wants to topple the government and establish its rule based on Islamic Sharia law.
