Some supporters of Kenya’s opposition leader Raila Odinga are pushing for a Nobel Prize for him.
The supporters have launched an online petition to have him nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize.
The petition has so far gained over 2000 signatures with the hope that the veteran politician will get recognized for an award.
Why should Odinga receive Noble Prize?
The petition reads “Raila Odinga has transformed the lives of millions of kenyans by sacrificing his freedom in exchange for transformation from totalitarianism, tyrany, dictatorial norms and draconian dark day single party democratic monopoly to multi party democracy creating opportunity for people to exercise their rights to elect persons of their choice.”
“Me and all Kenyans could have been in the dark without his sacrifies. Raila has played important role and pioneered/brooked peace initiatives not only in Kenya but African continent.
The recent hand shake with President Kenyatta like the previous with President Kibaki saved Kenya from turning into bloody civil war. Raila Odinga deserves Nobel Peace Price” according to the petition.
Raila Odinga lost last year’s presidential elections to President Uhuru Kenyatta. He challenged the results and succeeded in getting the Supreme Court to annul the results.
A new poll was ordered to be organized but Odinga and his coalition party boycotted it.
President Kenyatta won the fresh elections but rejected the results and declared himself the “people’s president”.
The declaration sparked political tension in Kenya until the rival politicians resolved their differences this year.
The supporters of Odinga say his decision to make peace and surrender his political ambition deserves commendation.
