A former minister under former Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe has been jailed for corruption.

A Zimbabwe court on Friday jailed Samuel Undenge a former energy minister, four years year. He was convicted of graft.

Herald newspaper reports that Samuel Undenge, 62, will serve just two-and-half years. 18 months of his jail term were suspended on condition of good behaviour.

Undenge becomes the first former senior government official to be jailed for corruption after Robert Mugabe resigned from power last year.

Local media reports that the former energy minister was found guilty of awarding a PR contract to a company owned by a top Zanu-PF official.

The said contract did not go through a public tender and was worth $12 000.

Herald reports that “Undenge has been jailed effective two-and-half years for abuse of public office after he handpicked a public relations company for the Zimbabwe Power Company without going to tender”.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa who took over from Robert Mugabe has launched a campaign to fight graft.

The 75-year-old is hoping his actions so far deliver him an electoral victory in this month’s Presidential elections.

His biggest rival is MDC’s Nelson Chamisa who is relatively younger.
