Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has explained why he announced his re-election bid early this year.

On Friday he revealed that his decision was to cool tempers and avoid further division within his party.

Buhari was speaking at a meeting with members of his Support Group in Abuja, according to the Punch.

The President of Nigeria in April announced his intention to seek re-election in the 2019 presidential election.

Buhari at the time said his decision despite facing major challenges in his country and criticisms about his performance was the best.

On Friday he said “I had to announce before the National Executive Committee about my intention to ask for the party’s nomination for next year’s election, so that we can save a lot of time and cool tempers.

“A lot of people are trying to make it a habit of being a nuisance to themselves and to Nigerians.

“So, when I announced my intention, ‘I said okay, let those who are serious come out;’ and I try to make sure that the party is re-organised and consolidated”

President Buhari has contested for president in 2003, 2007 and 2011 but only became successful and 2015.

The Nigerian leader is still hopeful he holds the key to transforming Nigeria from its current state.

He has struggled to deal with his country’s economic crisis as millions remain jobless.  Buhari’s government has also failed to contain ethnic clashes and the insurgency of militant group Boko Haram.
