A Nigerian law student who was refused access to her graduation months ago for wearing a hijab has finally graduated.
Amasa Firdaus was refused entry to the ceremony grounds seven months ago after she refused to remove her hijab.
The student of the University of Ilorin was asked then by officials to take the hijab off. Her refusal means she missed out on being called to bar.
Right to wear Hijab
Firdaus according to The Nigerian Lawyer insisted on wearing her wig on top of her Hijab as she usually does.
She described the actions of the university not to call her to the bar as a violation of her right to freedom of religion per the Nigerian constitution.
Firdaus on Tuesday finally got the chance to wear a wig on top of her headscarf. She was part of the 1,550 students who graduated in the capital, Abuja.
The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria has welcomed the news of her graduation.
Firdaus has been congratulated by many on social media including an aide to Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari.
Congratulations BARRISTER Amasa Firdaus who was called to bar today with her Hijab. That didn’t come so easy, her victory is one of the many good advantages of Social Media. She fought not only for herself but for the generation to come. History will surely be kind to her. pic.twitter.com/GzFTGvm4eh

Congratulations to Amasa Firdaus who has now been called to the Nigerian Bar with her hijab. I am proud to have stood on the side of honour in her case. I am proud that I don’t bay with the mob or run with the herd. The truth will always prevail. https://t.co/dRcgr3UPqm

Congratulations to Amasa Firdaus on your call to Bar. I was one of those that blasted her rebellion last December but now that the Body of Chambers has approved the use of hijab there’s a lesson to learn. We must challenge status quo passed down to us by the oyibos. She’s a hero

Congratulations to Firdaus Amasa. She will be remembered as someone who stood her ground and brought about much needed discussions, and also paved the way for other Hijabis to come. Support all the way ??
