The son of Former South African President, Jacob Zuma has been charged with corruption.
Duduzane Zuma appeared in court on Monday in leg-chains and was released on bail.
His bail was secured at the tune of $7,439.76 and will reappear in court when his case resumes on Jan, 24, 2019.
Why his arrest?
Details about why he has been charged with corruption are scanty at the moment.
He was however accused by the country’s deputy finance minister Mcebisi Jonas of engaging in corrupt acts.
The allegations are linked to a multi-million rand offer allegedly made to Jonas on behalf of the Gupta family.
Jonas claims in 2016 the Guptas offered him the position of finance minister. That was before former president Zuma sacked then finance minister Nhlanhla Nene.
Zuma and the Guptas have all denied any wrongdoing. Duduzane’s lawyer Rudi Krause says his client plans to contest the charges.
Duduzane had returned to South Africa last week to attend his brother’s funeral. He was detained at Johannesburg’s main airport on Friday.
Family trouble
Jacob Zuma himself is facing corruption charges relating to 783 questionable payments he allegedly received in connection with the controversial multi-billion rand arms deal.
Zuma’s corruption charges were first filed against him in 2005 when his financial adviser, Schabir Shaik, was jailed for fraud and corruption.
Mr Zuma went on trial in 2006 but the case collapsed when the prosecution said it was not ready to proceed more than a year after he was charged.
He has already appeared in court twice this year since exiting power.
