Tunisia’s capital city, Tunis now has its first woman mayor, Souad Abderrahim who was elected on Tuesday.
The 53-year-old who manages a pharmaceutical firm said she dedicates her “victory to all Tunisian women.”
“My first task will be to improve the face of Tunis,” she said.
Abderrahim had to emerge victorious after two rounds of voting by councillors. The process was however boycotted by left-wing and centrist parties.
She beat her closest rival by 26 votes to 22.
Abderrahim was the candidate for the Islamist party, Ennahdha which is part of Tunisia’s coalition government.
Abderrahim’s priority will be to deal with the city’s deteriorating waste disposal services.
Last month’s municipal elections are the first since the 2011 uprising sparked the Arab Spring.
Other towns also elected women to head them.
