A Liberian-born British nurse is awaiting sentencing after a court convicted her of human trafficking.
Josephine Iyamu, 51 was convicted in the UK for trafficking five Nigerian women to Germany. She will be sentenced next Wednesday.
These Nigerian women were sent to Germany to work as prostitutes.
Iyamu’s style of operation
Iyamu reportedly sells her victims into prostitution after subjecting them to voodoo rituals.
She coerces her victims to hand over money accrued from their sex work to her. The women are made to swear oaths during fetish ritual ceremonies.
The fetish ceremony according to proceedings in court involves the trafficked women eating chicken hearts and drinking blood containing worms.
A powder is also rubbed into cuts on them all under duress.
Iyamu charges her victims around $35,000 for facilitating their travel Germany. She then forced them to work as prostitutes to repay the debt.
Conviction
The Birmingham Crown Court convicted Iyamu of human trafficking on five counts.
She is charged of arranging or facilitating travel for sexual exploitation. A jury also found her guilty of perverting the course of justice.
Andy Young, from the Crown Prosecution Service says Iyamu “exploited five vulnerable women by promising them a better life in Europe.”
“Instead she treated the women like property and forced them to become prostitutes,” Young added.
Many young women in Africa are exploited occasionally by human traffickers who promise to send them to Europe and America for better life.
