Ministers in Ghana are banned from embarking on foreign trips. The country’s President, Nana Akufo-Addo hopes the ban will get his ministers to focus on working.
The ban announced over the weekend also affects deputy ministers, local government officials and all government appointees.
Only the Foreign Affairs Minister Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey is exempted from the ban.
Why the ban?
The memo said the new “Guidelines in respect of future foreign travels” is “aimed at minimizing disruption to Government’s domestic work”.
Ghanaian officials often embark on foreign trips costing the state millions of dollars annually.
Some analysts believe this ban is also intended to reduce the cost the state bears for such trips.
