The Prime minister, Abiy Ahmed was at the rally when the attack was carried out. Two people were killed.
Officials say more than 150 people were also wounded.
“The number of suspects in custody for involvement in the attack in Meskel Square has now reached 30,” Zeinu Jemal, head of the Federal Police Commission, told state-owned Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation.
Who launched the attack?
Local media reports that the attack was launched by an unidentified assailant moments after the prime minister, finished his speech at the rally.
Abiy was whisked away by guards, according to eyewitness account.
Reuters reports that the assailant with the grenade was wrestled to the ground by police before it exploded.
Tens of thousands of people had gathered in the centre of Addis Ababa for the rally.
Abiy resolute on reforms
The prime minister said the attack was an “attempt by forces who do not want to see Ethiopia united.”
Abiy became prime minister after his predecessor, Hailemariam Desalegn, resigned in February this year.
He has tried to restore order to the East African country that has witnesses deadly protests and unrest in parts of the country.
