The passionate football legend of Argentina, Diego Maradona has described his country’s team as a “disgrace” after drawing with Iceland.
Argentina were held by Iceland on Saturday in their first group game but Maradona isn’t pleased with the team’s performance.
He has warned manager Jorge Sampaoli that “he can’t come back to Argentina” if his team doesn’t improve.
Captain Lionel Messi missed a penalty to the shock of many including Maradona who watched from the stands on Saturday.
Maradona told Venezuelan television that “I get the feeling there’s an anger at the heart of the team”.
“It’s a disgrace. Not having prepared for the match knowing that Iceland are all 1.90m tall.”
“I don’t blame the players. I could blame the lack of work rate. But I can’t blame the players, much less Messi, who gave it all he had,” said Maradona.
“I missed five penalties on the spin and I was still Diego Armando Maradona. I don’t think that they dropped two points because Messi missed a penalty,” he added.
Maradona won the 1986 World Cup with Argentina and once coached the team at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Argentina will play Croatia in their next game on 21 June.
