Police in Nigeria have revealed that a man has been arrested for illegally selling blood.
Achegbulu Paul, 45 operates the illegal blood bank where he pays donors for the blood they donate.
He subsequently sells the blood to those in need of it for a profit.
Style of Operation
Achegbulu Paul, is said by the police to have been operating from his apartment in Lagos.
A police statement on the issue said the suspect paid about $5.50 per pint to donors and sells it for $19.
He was arrested after a 17-year-old donated four pints of blood and had to be admitted to hospital days later.
Impact of victims
The police said the young boys mother discovered that her son wasnt feeling well and looked “like a corpse”.
Paul is a trained lab technician, according to police and has been operating this illegal scheme for five years.
Police have now launched a wider investigation into the incident with fears it could be widespread across Africa’s most populous nation.
There are fears blood from this syndicate could also be infected due to lack of proper screening at local hospitals.
