The South African Communist Party has accused the country’s former leader Jacob Zuma of working against the government led by Cyril Ramaphosa in the fight against corruption.

The General Secretary of the South African Communist Party, Blade Nzimande has said that the ruling African National Congress (ANC) has in the past made efforts to deal with corruption under Zuma but since his exit from power his allies continue to disrupt progress.

“In many ways, former president Zuma is at the heart of this fightback, together with a group of discredited individuals,” Nzimande told The Star newspaper.

Blade Nzimande, the minister of transport who heads a Communist Party that is in an alliance with the ANC said that there are still Zuma allies in top party positions blocking Ramaphosa’s reform programme.

Mr. Zuma who left power this year is facing prosecution for 18 charges of corruption. The charges relate to 783 questionable payments Zuma allegedly received in connection with the controversial multi-billion rand arms deal.

The former South African leader resigned from office after the African National Congress recalled him and put pressure on him to step down.
